Stop Living In Illusions: Taiwan Warns China

Amid growing tension with China, Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan President, said that Beijing should not live in any kind of illusions that Taiwanese people will bow to pressure. On the National Day of Taiwan, President Tsai said that country will defend its democratic way of life “Nobody can force Taiwan to take the path China has laid out for us,” her statement comes a day after Xi Jinping vowed to a ‘reunification’ with Taiwan.

She said in her statement that Taiwan will not “act rushly” but no one can put pressure on Taiwan to follow the Chinese path.

“Standing on democracy’s first line of defence,” Tsai said, who is representing 23 million population of the country.

On National Day, on 9 October, Taiwan held a military parade, posing a challenge to China amid the heightened tension between both countries.

China claims the entire Taiwan, which has been ruling separately in a democratic way since 1949, as its own territory and wants to control over the island by the military and diplomatic pressure.

Earlier, on Saturday, Chinese President Xi Jinping had said that ‘unification’ with Taiwan should be fulfilled peacefully.

“No one should underestimate the Chinese people’s staunch determination, firm will, and strong ability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Xi said in the Great Hall of the People.
