Legal group Lawyers for Liberty today asked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to uphold the promises made by Pakatan Harapan in its GE15 manifesto to reform the government. Legal group director Zaid Malek said that Police powers should not be used to silence Anwar Ibrahim’s critics.

Zaid Malek said that the new government should avoid old governments pitfalls if it wants to encourage free speech and a robust democratic culture.

In a statement he said, “We call upon the new government and prime minister to uphold their promise of reform in the GE15 manifesto and halt all investigations on critics of the prime minister.”

Zaid said that the new government’s action to immediately call for police action against critics of the prime minister is unacceptable.
