Online news portal Malaysiakini reported that Gombak MP Azmin Ali was poised to become the next deputy prime minister. The report claimed that both–Bersatu and UMNO agreed to choose Azmin as the next DPM.
Earlier, it was speculated the Bersatu’s general secretary Hamzah Zainuddin could become the DPM but he did not get much support from the UMNO and his own party compared to Azmin.
Azmin, who is known as the right hand of ex-PM Muhyiddin Yassin, was the frontrunner for the post of DPM since the PN collapsed last week.
According to sources, Azmin wanted to become the deputy of Ismail Sabri and had threatened to withdraw his support if his demand was not fulfilled.
Ismail Sabri, who took over the charge from Muhyiddin Yassin last week, had said yesterday that no opposition members of parliament will become part of his cabinet.
The new cabinet of the government will be announced this week, PM Sabri had conferred yesterday in Kedah.
